Head of Māori Engagement/Manavator | Young Enterprise Trust/Toru Whā
Ian is Head of Māori Engagement, aka the Manavator for Young Enterprise, focussing on the development and success of rangatahi Māori venturing into te ao Pakihi. He has previously held roles with Callaghan Innovation, NZ’s innovation agency and spent significant time with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa developing and leading out Kōkiri, Aotearoa’s inaugural accelerator dedicated to speeding up the development of Māori-led start-ups.
Ian’s mahi has led him to share time and thoughts with our whānau overseas in Hawaii, Canada and Australia with an emphasis on indigenous approaches to innovation. His passions lie in supporting our whānau of global indigenous peoples, with Ian’s core role to connect-the-dots and help build the people who build their opportunities. For Ian, our whānau are innovative by nature and history provides ample evidence; however, nowadays most existing structures do not facilitate the means to grow businesses that measure success outside the status quo.
Ian thrives in his work of supporting people towards their definition of success. His professional history spans the corporate, education and startup sectors; Ian holds an MBA from The University of Waikato.
Above all however is that Ian is from down the road in Whangara, is a proud dad to Elijah and Nikau, and the husband of an incredible wāhine Talia.
